Word Work/Daily 5 Question about Listen to Reading and a Freebie

I introduced Word Work this week in Daily 5. The kiddos are eating it up. I set it up like centers (their choice). I began with Wikki Sticks, Read/Write the Room, a SmartBoard activity, magnets, and Listen to Reading. We had been working on this from last week. I still can't figure out how to work this in while building stamina all by itself so I incorporated the two.
It's still in the initial stages, but they are working so hard. I had some make the entire alphabets and their names out of the Wikki Sticks. They are loving it!!!

I will get some pictures up next week. Today we are going to the ZOO, ZOO, ZOO...how about YOU, YOU, YOU...you can come TOO, TOO, TOO...we're going to the ZOO, ZOO, ZOO!!!

I was wondering if anyone had a better way to introduce Listen to Reading.
We only have five computers in our classroom. I try to get our cart of iPads down to the room at least once a week. Any suggestions?

  1. I love your writing paper! Thank you.
Glad to hear your Daily Five is going well.
Do you have a listening centre? You know, the cd player with the multiple head phone plug ins and multiple book copies? That's what I use .

  2. Cute Writing Paper!
We just started Daily 5 this year and we are loving it! We introduced listen to reading last week. We have a laptop computer cart that we checked out from the computer lab so each kid could introduce it to them. Last year, we didn't have the laptops to use and we did use our classroom computers. So, we have overhead projectors that we projected the things up on the board and showed the class all at once what to do.
We only have 4 classroom computers during our listen to reading time to use. So, we just make sure that during a round only 4 are put on listening to reading. :-)

  3. I'm in the same boat that you are in!

I introduced Word Work and built our stamina with three choices: Wiki Sticks, Play dough, or letter cards.

Once my firsties had that down, I introduced LIstening to Reading. We have 2 computers, 2 IPods, and a listening center with cd/headphones. I couldn't figure out a sane way to have the student's choose between all of those choices, so for now I have a pocket chart where students rotate to word work (their choice of manipulatives) or a listening center. (Our first two rotations are read to self and partner reading).

We modeled during mini lessons and came up with solutions on what to do if you have a problem with the technology (go ask the technology helper, push the home button and start again, etc).

The problem is, my technology helper does not always know how to fix the problem. This week was the first week for us try out the rotations. It was always semi-chaotic getting started. I think as the students gain experience with the technology, the chaos will go away…I hope…

Let me know if you figure out anything that works well!
