A Little Visitor, a Giveaway, and some Freebies!

You should not miss this giveaway!!!
Jivey's got K-1, 2-3, and 4-6 giveaways!!!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
We had a little visitor today.
We were getting ready for recess...
One of my little firsties came up and said, "Mrs. Kempf, I have a mouse in my jacket.".
Me, thinking that it was a stuffed animal said, "Oh, let me see!".
NOPE, NOT A STUFFED ANIMAL!!!
She had put her coat in her backpack before school and got it out to put on for recess.
Here comes the CUTEST little mouse you have ever seen.
Luckily, I am not afraid of little creatures. I found out some of my coworkers are soooooooo afraid! They couldn't even look at him.
Well, we put him in an aquarium and kept him there until the end of the day. Then we let him go in our school garden.
I had already sent a picture to my husband. His response was, "YOU CANNOT KEEP THE MOUSE!!!"
Oh well!
What an exciting day in first grade!

We will be writing about this in Writing Workshop! Stay tuned!

I updated my May Song. It looks so much cuter.
Click on the picture to head on over and download it.
It's FREEEEEEEEE!

I also added a Making Words ~ EARTH DAY to my store.
As always these Making Words Activities are Free. :)

Have a wonderful, MOUSE FREE day!!!

Report Cards DONE!!! A FREEBIE and a New Math Product!!

I have been MIA for almost a week! AHHHH! I have been so busy with the musical (Rehearsals until 10:30 at night), softball practice (my oldest is on varsity and my youngest is on modified), and everything else. :)

Our report cards are due today. We get them printed out this week so we can go over them and then send them out on Friday. We need to redo them so badly to match the CCSS. APPR has taken so much of our time this year. I love acronyms... HAHAHAHAHA!

It is also TESTING week for the upper-grade levels. I cannot imagine their stress.
Good luck to all that are giving tests this week. :)

We finished our first weekend of "Oliver". It was a huge success. Saturday night and Sunday afternoon were SOLD OUT. We even had to put chairs in the aisle to accommodate so many people. :)

I have a FREEBIE and a new item for you in my TpT store.
The FREEBIE is a collection of writing paper for several occasions.

The second item is my "Flippin' and Floppin'" True or False math product.
Who doesn't like flip flops???

CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.D.7 Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false. For example, which of the following equations are true and which are false? 6 = 6, 7 = 8 – 1, 5 + 2 = 2 + 5, 4 + 1 = 5 + 2.

Click on the pictures to take you to the products.

Have a wonderful day!!!

Writing Workshop/ Freebie #5

Today I am going to talk about "Opinion" pieces.
These are sometimes difficult for students to grasp.
Until...you put something in front of them they can't resist.
My colleague, Linda and I put candy to the test. I know, I know, but we couldn't resist and neither could our kiddos!

We showed them a bag of candy. They had to convince us why they should have it.
Included in this writing: friendly letter, opinion, editing, peer editing.
I wished I would have kept their letters so I could have shown you.
We got everything:
...because I am good to my sister
....I listen to my parents
...I am nice to my friends
...I like candy
...you are pretty
...you are the best teacher

We chose the best written one.
It, of course, included that they were going to share it with the rest of the class.
ALWAYS!!!

We also wrote to our principal to "tell" her what improvements could be made to the school. Some of them were so interesting.
~swimming pool
~better food
~playground activities
She wrote back to tell them what could be done and what she was working on. So powerful!

What are some ways you have your students write opinion pieces?

Here are your freebies!

Enjoy!!!
Have a wonderful day!

Writing Workshop/ Freebie #4

Personal Narratives

I am having a hard time with talking about getting away from Personal Narratives due to the Common Core Standards.
I am not sure we are deciphering it the way it should be. I know we have to write "opinion" pieces, "how to" books, and "informational" pieces. But these first graders are experts at one thing...THEMSELVES.
What happens in their lives is so important. More important than anything else. How can they write about other things?

As I am looking at the Common Core Standards, I do not see where it says NOT to teach, experience, enhance, or improve our Personal Narrative writing.

So, I am going to continue to teach it with GUSTO!!!
I think this leads to all the other things we have to teach them in first grade.

~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~
OK, so now that I have that off my chest. How do you teach first graders to write Personal Narratives?
MODEL< MODEL
I write about something that has happened to me every day.
We talk about what our writing should "look like" and "sound like".
I have tried writing on the SmartBoard, but I like writing on my chart paper. That way the kiddos feel like I am one of them.
~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~

Here are your freebies for today.

Letter Writing Freebies

We are writing our Pen Pal letters.
 I have found that it is hard for some of my firsties to follow how to write a friendly letter....no matter how many different ways I try.
I made up these three letter templates to help them out. One is very basic with labels for them to follow and the others are the templates with no labels.
I gave these to the kiddos who needed just that little bit of guidance. It helped them so much.

They are all in my TPT store. I have linked them at the bottom of each picture.

I hope they help your kiddos as much as they helped mine.

Don't forget about my giveaway! It ends January 18th at midnight!

Some lucky follower will win this!

Parent/Teacher Conference Form

I know everyone is close to Conference time.

What do you share with the family? Do you have the students come in? What are some catch phrases you use? How long do your conferences last?

Here is a form I use. I wish it had more room for notes about the student. But, this is what they want us to use. Parent/Teacher Conference Form.

Good luck with all your conferences. Maybe I will set up a linky party to share our successes.
