Camp Read-a-Lot

I was able to visit one of my colleagues as she was having a Camp Read-a-Lot Day with her class. I went outside to visit with the kiddos and read with one of my favorite "old" firsties.

Summer??? How many more days?

We have one more half day with the kiddos and then a check-out day.

Yesterday was Literacy Camp Day. It was not suppose to rain...but it did. This is the first time we have had to have it inside. Luckily we have an empty classroom we could set everything up in. 

We had tents of:

Non-Fiction

Informational

Writing

Fiction Writing

Non-Fiction Writing

Fairy Tales

Dr. Seuss

I am sure there are more. The first and second graders made them all up.

They took their shoes off and lined them all up.

So cute!

I don't know how many tents there were!

All Literacy Tents!

The kiddos even got to look at their yearbooks in the informational tent.

And then we had two Mystery Readers!!!

The first is my daughter and the second is our principal.

We had so much fun!

I can't wait to do it next year!

Welcome June!

After today, we have 12 full and two 1/2 days. 

I am so jealous of all of you who are out already. 

When June finally arrives, we all sigh Ahhhhh, and then promptly begin to scream in our heads...AHHHHH! We have made it!!!! We have made it!?!?!? 

That means: Assessments GALORE!

DRA's, ELP folders, Math Assessments and recording, AIMSWEB, Report Cards and comments, Permanent Records.

Goodness!!! Really? This is what we have waited for?

Well, in order to make it more fun for my firsties (and so I don't end up pulling all my hair out), my colleague and I are going to have a "Literacy Campout" again this year. This is going to be a little later than last year. We haven't gotten to the garden yet. 

We are beginning to pull out all the boards that have been there for YEARS! I am going to get one of my parents to rototill the garden this weekend. 

We have started some plants inside and the FFA from the high school is coming over to help us plan and plant. We also have the pre-school coming in to help and plant flowers around the outside. 

It desperately needs a new fence. That will have to wait until next year. I am going to have to find some grants. 

Our "Literacy Campout" is going to consist of:

Reading Tent

Writing Tent

Observation Tent

Listening Tent

We were trying to think of some more or some better names. Do you have any ideas for us?

Literacy Camp

Literacy Camp with first and second graders. We had a Literacy Camp day. Oh, it was so much fun. We put up our tents and set out our blankets for reading and writing.

It turned out to be such a beautiful day.

The students chose which "stations" would be featured for the day.
Science: Observing and writing about the butterflies the second graders had hatched.
Non-Fiction: Reading
Story Telling: Writing
Books sorted by different genres and authors.

We are going to do so much more next year. We are planning a "campfire" Morning Meeting. S'mores and so much more.

There were two classes participating this year. Next year, we have two more joining us already.
It was a great way to wind down, have fun, and still be working on things that are important in first grade.
