Student Notebooks

Do you use Student Notebooks? I didn't until this year.

I will never go back.

If a notebook day is not scheduled, my firsties are disappointed. :)

I print off the problem for them. I tried to have them write it in their notebooks themselves, but I figured that it is not an assessment of their writing. And it's much faster.

After we finish Calendar and Rocket Math, students get their papers and glue them into their notebooks. They sit on the rug and wait for the rest of the students to get ready. While they are getting ready, I write the problem up on the board. I read it to them and I have them talk to their "Smart Partners" about the problem. An example would be from the problem below. "Talk to your Smart Partner about how you are going to solve this." I give them about a minute to have a conversation then I call on a few to share what their Smart Partner has decided to do. They share what their Smart Partner said, "My Smart Partner, (insert name) said that he was going to solve the problem by counting on his fingers." This way, they are listening to their peers and sharing what their partner said, not what they, themselves said. Listening AND speaking!!!
When I have chosen a couple to share, I ask them if they are ready and then I give them three to seven minutes to record their answers depending on the difficulty.
While they are figuring out the answer I walk around and choose three students to share when the time is up. I look for three different answers and write their names on the board after the time is up.

Math Daily 3 just a little introduction

I am in the middle of my grad course for this semester. I am taking Math Daily 3 from Upper Iowa University. It is the second one I have taken on the Daily 5/3 :)

Math Daily 3 goes along with our program Investigations. It just seems to flow with the whole sequence, schedule, everything.

After teaching the regular mini-lesson, there are focus lessons to be taught and then student and teacher choices.
This is where I start to LOVE it! The kiddos get to choose how they want to work on a strategy or concept taught. Brilliant! Investigations has built-in Math Workshop days and times, so this is going to be very easy for me to utilize in my classroom. The other thing I really like about this is that it is not an additional thing I have to do in my classroom. This will add to my time I can spend with individuals and small groups.

A Little Investigations and CURRENTLY :)

We use the math program Investigations.
We are in the seventh unit of nine. I actually think we will get through all of the units this year.

We have been working on patterns.
We have a meeting next week. Who am I kidding? We have three meetings next week.

1. Discuss implementing the additional unit for math next year.
2. Data Meeting: because we all know that "It's all about the data."!
3. Some other meeting that's probably important but for the life of me I can't seem to remember right now!
I think it's a really good time to be out of the classroom and have to write up sub plans. Especially when the kids are on their best behavior! Sarcasm???

I have to tell you, without blogging and all your wonderful ideas and posts, I would net be as ready as I am to take on CCS! Thanks! At least I am all set for the math meeting.

On another note...
Farley's new currently is up!!!!!!!
YIPPEEEE!!!

Hope on over to her blog to join.
Enjoy!
Have a wonderful day!
